Project Highlight: Preserving the Historic Towers of Battle Harbour Historic Trust
Tiller Engineering recently inspected two historic towers located in the culturally and historically significant Battle Harbour in coastal Labrador. These towers, erected in 1904 (timber) and the 1930s (steel) by the Canadian Marconi Wireless Company, are more than just your typical telecommunication tower - they're vital artifacts of communication history.
Battle Harbour was home to the first of a series of nine wireless stations North of Belle Isle. It played a crucial role in transmitting messages both North and South, with equipment ranging from a medium wave spark transmitter to Morse key sets. Over time, updates included a radio set, evolving the station's functionality while preserving its heritage.
Our team conducted a two-day condition inspection using a combination of ground-level visual assessments and drone flights. This work ensures the ongoing structural preservation of these remarkable towers, safeguarding their legacy for future generations.
Thank you to Battle Harbour for the opportunity to contribute to preserving this important piece of history! We’re proud to share our work and encourage everyone to explore this unique site.
