Richard (Rick) W. Tiller
M.Eng., P.Eng., FEC, FCSCE, FEIC, CEO, Tiller Engineering Inc. President & CEO
rtiller@tei-inc.caRick graduated with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1988. Rick started his career with Structural Consultants Limited a St. John’s based structural engineering consulting firm where he was responsible for numerous building designs. He studied for his graduate degree part-time while working and received his Master of Structural Engineering from Memorial in 1995. In 1995 Rick joined the NL based multi discipline firm BFL Consultants Ltd. where he held the role as Lead Structural Engineer. During his time at BFL he had the opportunity to be involved in the design of the Hibernia GBS and the Hibernia Topsides. In 1998 he accepted an overseas assignment with BFL and worked on the structural design of the Petro Canada’s Terra Nova FPSO offshore facility.
Shortly after his return to Canada in 1999 he established Tiller Engineering Inc. Today the firm has grown to become an established independent structural firm and are considered niche specialists in Tower and Telecoms Engineering as well as Energy and Infrastructure. Rick is a member of the Technical Committee of the Canadian Tower Code CSA S37-13 and a Founding Member of STAC Tower Council.
Rick is Past Chair of Association of Consulting Engineers Newfoundland & Labrador (ACECNL) and Association of Consulting Engineers (ACEC) Canada. Rick is a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada, The Canadian Society for Civil Engineering and a Fellow of the Professional Engineers of Canada. Rick is the Past Chair of the Board of the recently established Center for Entrepreneurship at Memorial University and Past Board Member of Ronald Macdonald House NL. He is past president of the Rotary Club of Waterford Valley and a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. Rick has been recognized as a Top 50 Atlantic Canada Business CEO in 2016 and received the 2022 Beaubian Award recognizing his lifetime commitment to ACEC and the Canadian consulting engineering profession.
Jonathan Walsh
Vice President - Telecoms & Asset Integrity Division, P. Eng.
jwalsh@tei-inc.caJonathan has over twenty years of experience in the analysis, design and inspection of Building, Heavy Industrial and tower facilities in both the electrical transmission and telecommunications industries. As VP of the Telecoms & Heavy Industrial division, Jonathan oversees, schedules and coordinates all project and engineering staff in addition to optimizing quality and overall costs. Jonathan is responsible for client relations, proposals, design and onsite inspections. He has analyzed a wide variety of communication towers for clients throughout Canada and has performed numerous tower inspections to the CSA S37 standard. Jonathan is also the Structure, Tower and Antenna Council (STAC) Engineering Guidelines and Practices Committee Lead which helps ensure communications structures throughout Canada continue to be constructed with the highest regard for worker safety.
Michael Tiller
B. Eng, Project Engineer
mtiller@tei-inc.caMichael Tiller joined our firm in 2017 as a junior structural engineer spending an abundance of time with some top-quality engineers learning the ins and outs of the industry. Since joining Michael has developed a keen speciality in structures design including telecommunication structures as well as infrastructure and energy assets. Michael brings plenty of energy into the way he engineers solutions with his role branching out overtime to also include aspects of managing, marketing, business development and client relations. Michael’s personality and skill sets with a strong emphasis on tech and innovation in engineering are a core slice of our Tiller team.
Simon Forward
E.I.T., B. Eng. Structural Engineer + Field Engineer
sforward@tei-inc.caSimon joined Tiller at the start of 2023, following his graduation from Memorial University’s civil engineering program in 2022. Having spent the latter years of his degree focussing on structural, municipal, and coastal/ocean engineering, he provides a strong background in engineering design. In his position as Structural Engineer, he conducts design, computer modelling, and deliverables for both the telecommunications and structural engineering teams. Simon comes with a strong desire to learn, given his interest in the area of structural engineering. Joining a strong team of highly experienced engineers, he seeks to further develop the team-centric atmosphere with his technical ability and friendly persona.
Stephen Tiller
Business Development and Project Support Coordinator
stiller@tei-inc.caStephen holds a Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree, in which he graduated from in early 2022. Much of his education and work background specialized in managing marine oriented projects, energy, risk analysis, project management, etc., with attention to economic and environmental sustainability. He has numerous peer-reviewed published articles in these topics. Before joining the Tiller team, Stephen worked in risk management and analysis in the marine transport and renewables industry. Upon joining Tiller in 2022, Stephen has been responsible for both short-term and long-term business development strategies, proposal writing, market analysis, risk management, marketing, etc. Stephen is excited to be part of the team and looks forward to where he can help bring Tiller.
Jordan Doyle
P.Tech., Structural Designer & Intermediate Draftsperson
jdoyle@tei-inc.caJordan is a Civil Engineering Technologist who graduated from the College of the North Atlantic Corner Brook Campus. In 2013, shortly after graduation, Jordan joined Tiller focusing on structural design, inspection and drafting of telecommunications, buildings and offshore oil and gas. Jordan is currently an associate member with AETTNL and has achieved his Professional Technologist (P.Tech) designation.
Stewart Spurrell
P.Tech., Senior Structural Technologist
sspurrell@tei-inc.caStewart has over thirty years of experience in inspecting, drafting and designing numerous buildings and facilities across the province. Stewart is one of the most experienced designers and inspectors of building systems practicing in Atlantic Canada. He has designed challenging building projects and has been part of detailed condition assessment inspections on a regular basis.
Josh Allen
Civil Engineering Technologist
Josh is a Civil Engineering Technologist who graduated from the College of the North Atlantic Ridge Road Campus in 2018. Shortly after graduating, Josh worked in Northern Alberta completing land surveys for many of Canada’s large oil and gas companies before deciding to return to school to obtain a degree in Civil Engineering.
Josh joined the Tiller team for his second work term as a Junior Structural Engineer Intern in January of 2023, seeking to improve his knowledge of structural engineering while adding value to the company from his past field experience.
Owen Afonso
Engineering Work Term Student
Owen is a co-op student at Tiller, joining the team for his work term from September to December. Currently pursuing a degree in civil engineering, he has a keen interest in structural engineering and infrastructure. During his time with us, Owen’s main responsibilities include report writing and conducting structural analysis, contributing to ongoing projects and gaining valuable hands-on experience. He is eager to apply his academic knowledge in a professional setting and is excited to learn from the talented team at Tiller while furthering his understanding of the field.
